Life changed while volunteering

Meet Adam who never stayed in our shelter, but is well known in our community. Adam lives in supportive housing close by and walks to the shelter for a coffee, or a free meal and then decided he would like to start volunteering. Adam is a young man who is a little slower then some.

Adam has had a problem with anger and how to properly express himself in public. There was many times where he would lose his cool and start yelling and screaming and even punching himself in his head. God has always given me a soft spot for people with disabilities.  Adam and I started to become friends, and he asked if he could volunteer. I let him come and wash dishes once a week, but when his anger took ahold of him he would go back to how he use to deal with it. I asked him to take some time off from volunteering until he was able to clear his head and get some help.

During his time off I took him for a coffee at Tim Horton’s, and then parked close by so we could have a private talk. Adam is someone who I love because of his welcoming personality and innocence. While we were in the parking lot I asked Adam if he has ever thought about having a relationship with Jesus. After talking he decided to pray and invite Jesus into his life. That Sunday he came to church and during our open testimony time he got up in front of everyone and told them how we went for a coffee and “sold his soul to Jesus”, I have never heard it put that way, but praise God for Him reaching out to anyone and everyone.

Adam will often “harass” me with questions of  wanting to take on new volunteer tasks. Adam asked if he could volunteer again and asked and asked and asked until I said yes. I started him out on dishes again and saw him flourish. He has now been volunteering for me I would say close to a year every week. The other day I received a phone call while I was at home from Adam, who told me that he had a job interview the next morning. I informed him that he could use me as a reference because he was doing so well at volunteering. He called me the next day and told me he got the job! I was very excited to see Adam moving forward in his life.

God continue to draw Adam close to your heart and fulfill the plan You have for his life.
